Bill Cavanaugh Is New Chairman Of The
North Carolina Symphony Board Of Trustees; Grant Yarber and Graham Mosely elected Vice-Chairmen;
other officers and new trustees also elected

William Cavanaugh III, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Progress Energy and currently the chairman of the World Association of Nuclear Operators, was elected Chairman of the North Carolina Symphony Society at its Annual Meeting, held June 23 in the Governor’s Mansion in Raleigh.
B. Grant Yarber, President of Capital Bank, was elected Vice Chairman, an office he will share with Graham Mosely, Immediate Past President of the Cape Fear Series. All officers serve one-year terms.
Other officers elected were: Catharine Biggs Arrowood, former Associate Attorney General and partner in the law firm of Parker, Poe, Adams and Bernstein, Treasurer; David Strong, President of Rex Healthcare, Assistant Treasurer; E. Kemp Reece, Jr., First Vice President of Davenport and Co., Secretary; and David Chambless Worters, President and CEO. Douglas C. Hornberger is Immediate Past Chairman.
New Trustees serving three-year terms are Nan Ogburn Cullman; Frank Daniels III, President and CEO of Vital Source Technologies, Inc.; Dr. Jaroslav “Jerry” Hulka, Professor Emeritus of the Ob/Gyn Department of the UNC School of Medicine; David Sontag, Wesley Wallace Professor of Communication Studies and Director of UNC-CH’s Writing for the Screen and Stage Program; and Darliene Woolner, Immediate Past President of the North Carolina Symphony League and President of the Sweeten Corporation and Regency Park Estates, Inc.
Trustees reelected to three-year terms are Don K. Davis, Raleigh; Dr. Charles Helton, Raleigh; Terry A. Henderson, Raleigh; Corinne Houpt, Chapel Hill; Henry A. Mitchell, Jr., Raleigh; Graham Mosely, Wilmington; Florence Peacock, Chapel Hill; E. Kemp Reece, Jr., Raleigh; Bing Sizemore, Cary; and Robert L.Wilson, Jr., Raleigh.
The North Carolina Symphony’s chapters throughout the state were honored for their diligent work selling tickets and raising money on behalf of the organization.

The Talley Cup is named in honor of Dr. Banks C. Talley for his years of service as executive director of the North Carolina Symphony. It is awarded to the chapter which has stretched itself significantly on behalf of the Symphony during the past year. Chapter president Linda Staunch accepted the Talley Cup on behalf of the New Bern Chapter.

America’s Next Great Orchestra Award honors the chapter or series which best epitomizes the aspirations of the North Carolina Symphony in becoming America’s next great orchestra. Criteria include best all-around performance for a given concert season, extraordinary community involvement and development, a team of enthusiastic board members and dedicated leadership from the chapter or series president. Chapter president Lynne Boney accepted the award for the Cape Fear Chapter.

Two chapters received the Grand Effort Award, which recognizes specific, extraordinary efforts to support the North Carolina Symphony in the community. Maggie Royster, president of the Onslow County Chapter and ex-officio trustee of the North Carolina Symphony Society Board, accepted the award on behalf of her chapter. Also honored was the Edgecombe County Chapter, Karen Andrus, president.
The newly-constituted board approved its $12.5 million operating budget for the 2006-07 fiscal year.
