RALEIGH – Have you ever been frustrated trying to find information that was once available on the Web, but is no longer there? Then you might be interested in the new North Carolina State Government Web Site Archives.

The Web Site Archives is a historical collection of Web sites created by state agencies and is available by going to www.ncculture.com and clicking on “Research.” The North Carolina State Archives and the State Library of North Carolina teamed up to capture, preserve, and provide easy access to state government information previously available on the Web. Using this tool, citizens can access Web-based state agency information and records.

Many state agencies utilize their Web pages as a means of disseminating information and assuring that citizens have access to their published documents and records. The Web Site Archives not only captures the information on the site, but also renders the look and feel of the site, so that users can experience the Web as it was at the time the information was posted there.

In September 2005, staff from the North Carolina State Archives and the State Library of North Carolina participated in a pilot program for Archive-It, a Web capture service provided by the Internet Archive, a non-profit organization. In April 2006, the Department of Cultural Resources purchased this service to meet their mandate to preserve and make accessible valuable, historical material and publications.
