( RALEIGH—Oct. 16) – Craft artists create works that are both utilitarian and beautiful, and the works of some of North Carolina’s best artisans will be touring the state from Nov. 16 through fall 2007.
Waterfall, a dazzling necklace of gold and silver by Mary Ann Scherr, Blood Red Spoon, a 6-foot glass exaggeration of a mundane object by Rick Beck, and Apron, a utilitarian object fashioned in metal by Elizabeth Brim, are among the 22 objects in the Discover NC Craft tour.
The first stop for Discover NC Craft Artists is the Community Council for the Arts in Kinston, where the exhibit will be mounted Nov. 16. The tour also will visit the Imperial Centre for the Arts in Rocky Mount and the Waterworks Visual Arts Center in Salisbury. The tour will allow many citizens to see the best of craft artwork produced in the state.
“From contemporary cups to jewelry, this exhibit is a stunning example of why North Carolina has an international reputation in craft,” said Department of Cultural Resources Secretary Lisbeth C. “Libba” Evans. “We look forward to showcasing these brilliant artists right here at home.”
Many of the artworks were originally part of the Governor’s North Carolina Craft Exhibition at the Executive Mansion, which was mounted April through July 2006. It provided a finale to the “Celebration of North Carolina Craft” proclaimed by Gov. Mike Easley for 2004-2005. The N.C. Department of Cultural Resources and the N.C. Craft Coalition organized the exhibition. Objects of glass, metal, wood, fiber, ceramics, and other materials are included.
