Acclaimed photographer Tim Barnwell will highlight the people and natural beauty of North Carolina’s mountains during a free program at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. Through images and oral history, Barnwell will present a close look at Mountain life in western North Carolina. During the program On Earth’s Furrowed Brow onSaturday, Dec. 2, at 3 p.m., he will share photographs and stories from his books The Face of Appalachia: Portraits From the Mountain Farm and On Earth’s Furrowed Brow (due out in April). A book signing follows the program.

Barnwell’s images of farmers, tobacco fields, river baptisms, country stores, fiddlers, barns and other scenes reflect the daily lives of Mountain residents and the beauty of the rugged landscape. The oral histories reveal the joys and challenges of hardworking and resourceful men and women.

Barnwell is a commercial and fine art photographer based in Asheville. His career has spanned more than 25 years as both a professional photographer and a photography instructor. His images have been widely published in dozens of magazines, such as Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, Southern Accents, House Beautiful, American Craft and Outdoor Photographer. Barnwell’s prints are in the permanent collections of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the SOHO Photo Gallery in New York and other galleries.
