( RALEIGH—Oct, 17) – Fact will be more chilling than fiction on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the State Capitol during a hair-raising but family friendly event, Scare on the Square: Dead Men Tell No Tales...Or DoThey? From 5:30-10 p.m., storytelling by the pirate Blackbeard, children’s activities and live music will delight young and old. At 6 p.m., tours will highlight supposed happenings at the Capitol. Registration is encouraged for the free program.

Does the spirit of Gov. Charles Aycock still linger in the Capitol almost 100 years after his body lay in state? Is that haunting scent of cigar smoke a sign from a long-deceased senator? What did paranormal researchers find at the State Capitol? Why do they think that North Carolina has the most haunted Capitol in America? These are some of the questions to be explored.

The pirate Blackbeard will come to life as re-enactor Ben Cherry tells stories in a spellbinding rendition of the life of North Carolina’s most infamous pirate, complete with costumes and props.

Most of the tour is handicap accessible. The State Capitol is in downtown Raleigh and bounded by Edenton, Salisbury, Morgan, and Wilmington Streets. Free parking is available in state lots near the Capitol. For information and to register, call (919) 733-4994.

The State Capitol, administered by the Division of State Historic Sites, is part of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, a state agency dedicated to the promotion and protection of North Carolina’s arts, history and culture.
